LEED v5 Platinum: the four requirements on top of 80 points
Under v4, Platinum was a points total. Under v5 BD+C, a project can reach 80 points and still miss Platinum, because four credits carry minimum achievements.
The four requirements
| Credit | New Construction | Core and Shell |
|---|---|---|
| EAc1 Electrification | 5 points | 4 points |
| EAc3 Enhanced Energy Efficiency | 8 points | 5 points |
| EAc4 Renewable Energy | 100% of site energy use from Tier 1, 2 and 3 renewables | 100% of base building energy use from Tier 1, 2 and 3 renewables |
| MRc2 Reduce Embodied Carbon | 20% reduction | 20% reduction |

What this means on a project
- Decide on Platinum before schematic design. Electrification and embodied carbon are set by early system and structural choices. They are hard to recover late.
- Core and Shell thresholds are lower but not trivial. 4 Electrification points and 5 efficiency points still rule out a conventional gas-fired base build.
- Renewables must cover all of it. The requirement is 100% of energy use, from any mix of the three renewable tiers, not a share.
- Points elsewhere can't compensate. A project short by one Electrification point is Gold, whatever its total.
Why it matters for the exam
This is exactly the kind of question a v4-trained candidate gets wrong: the arithmetic says Platinum, the rating system says Gold. Expect scenario questions that give you a points total and a credit breakdown, then ask for the certification level.
