LEED v4.1 to v5 BD+C: what actually changed
LEED v5 is a restructure, not a revision. If you trained on v4, much of what you know still applies in spirit, but the names, the structure and many of the numbers have moved.
Start with the gap nobody mentions
USGBC's summary of changes compares v4.1 with v5. But the retired LEED AP BD+C exam was based on v4, not v4.1. Version 4.1 was an optional update that projects could adopt credit by credit, and there was never a v4.1 exam.
So if you studied for v4, the official summary skips a layer. Wherever v4.1 had already changed something, the summary treats that change as settled and doesn't mention it. Study material built only from that summary carries the same gap.
The headline numbers
Counts from USGBC's summary of changes, checked against the July 2026 rating system.
Every credit and prerequisite in v5 now maps to at least one of three impact areas: decarbonization, quality of life, and ecological conservation and restoration.
Platinum is no longer just a points total
In v5, a New Construction project needs the points for Platinum and four minimum achievements: 5 Electrification points, 8 Enhanced Energy Efficiency points, 100% renewable energy and a 20% embodied carbon reduction. A project can have the points and still miss Platinum.

The renames
These are cheap marks on the exam if you know them, and lost marks if you don't. The credit is recognisable; the name isn't.
| v4.1 name | v5 name |
|---|---|
| Optimize Energy Performance | Enhanced Energy Efficiency |
| Minimum Energy Performance | Minimum Energy Efficiency |
| Building-Level Energy Metering | Energy Metering and Reporting |
| Storage and Collection of Recyclables | Planning for Zero Waste Operations |
| Construction and Demolition Waste Management | Construction and Demolition Waste Diversion |
| Water Metering | Water Metering and Leak Detection |
| Integrative Process | Integrative Design Process |
| Protect or Restore Habitat | Biodiverse Habitat |
| Open Space | Accessible Outdoor Space |
Credits that merged
- Location and Transportation is consolidated. Surrounding Density and Diverse Uses plus Access to Quality Transit become Compact and Connected Development. Reduced Parking Footprint plus Bicycle Facilities become Transportation Demand Management. High-Priority Site and Equitable Development becomes Equitable Development, and LEED for Neighborhood Development Location is removed.
- Sustainable Sites merges Construction Activity Pollution Prevention and Site Assessment into a new prerequisite, Minimize Site Disturbance.
- Water Efficiency merges indoor and outdoor water use into one prerequisite, Minimum Water Efficiency, and one credit, Enhanced Water Efficiency.
- Indoor Environmental Quality folds daylight, views, thermal comfort, acoustics and lighting into a single credit, Occupant Experience.
What's new
- Four new prerequisites in Integrative Process, Planning and Assessments: Climate Resilience Assessment, Human Impact Assessment, Carbon Assessment and, for Core and Shell, Tenant Guidelines.
- Energy: Electrification, Reduce Peak Thermal Loads and Grid Interactive credits, plus the Operational Carbon Projection and Decarbonization Plan prerequisite.
- Materials: Quantify and Assess Embodied Carbon, and Reduce Embodied Carbon.
- Project Priorities replaces the old Innovation and Regional Priority categories.
Two definition changes that catch people out
Irrigation baseline. Outdoor water calculations used to start from the peak watering month. In v5 they start from the annual theoretical irrigation requirement. Any v4-era irrigation calculation you memorised no longer applies.
Commissioning. Fundamental Commissioning asks much more of the commissioning provider, including attending design meetings and the 50% and 100% construction milestones. The small-project exemption is gone: every project commissions, and the provider must have commissioned at least two comparable projects.

The BD+C practice exams are written against the July 2026 rating system, and every explanation names the v4 answer where it differs.
